From Paisley to the John Day

Adventure day 3. I did a lot of driving today..

I normally listen to NPR driving around home but of I’ve been out of range for that. I got tired of the silence and started surfing the radio. I enjoyed country music, cattle prices (looking good for butcher cows, sell those light cattle now when spring grass is coming on), dramatizations (very) of bible stories in English with a “foreign accent,” and a guy reading classified ads including the number to call. Used tires, a set of mobile home axles, and a dog training collar were up for grabs. I need to download some podcasts before the next adventure.

395 from Paisley to Burns is so gorgeous and fun to drive with twists and turns.

I had a campground picked out just south of John Day but got there and realized it’s in the mountains! There was snow! I was looking for something warmer than my first night so nope. I headed on down through Canyon City, very cute, into John Day, and west to Dayville. I have a whole campground to myself, tucked right up against the John Day River.

I walked the 1/2 mile length of town, made a fire with some very hot and fast burning juniper, and ate my dinner. Is there a rule about kale and hummus by the campfire?

I finished with a toasted marshmallow!

Tomorrow I’ll drive up through the Painted Hills and home. Doing something new makes time expand. I feel like I’ve been gone a month but I know I’ll get home and everything will be like I was never gone!
