Lake Quinault to Hoh Rainforest

Adventure day 2. Well I did not sleep. My bed is comfortable, the temperature was comfortable, the campground was quiet. My eyes just stayed open šŸ™„

I had decided I’d make hot breakfasts this trip. Hahaha. Luckily I threw some backup oatmeal cups in. Once I got a little food on board I felt more interested in cooking. But Not the Pinterest recipe I’d saved. What was I thinking, I am not that cute couple with all the yummy food. I made an abbreviated version of chilaquilas with a torn up corn tortilla crisped in butter, an egg scrambled in and a torn up slice of cheddar melted on top. It was so easy and good! Maybe I’ll be a camping food blogger?

Well fortified, I hit the road to explore. First stop Kalaloch. Bob and I had stayed in a cabin there on a motorcycle trip years ago, so it was nice to see it again. And I love all the national park lodges.

Then I stopped at Ruby Beach. My cousin (in-law) Susan Brewer Jarnagin visited when she and daughter Lauren came to see us and they said it was so pretty so it’s been on my list. And it is pretty!

I headed up into the NP along the Hoh River to Hoh Rainforest.

I bought a new annual park pass, an act of faith that there will be trips and park visits again in the year to come. My last one expired Feb 2020 and I’ve had no reason to replace it. At this point I was feeling my lack of sleep so I picked a campsite, had lunch and took a nap.

The bathroom here is very nice and newly remodeled. And there is ONE. Literally one toilet. For the entire campground. At least several dozen sites. There are no hookups and mostly tent campers so almost no one has their own bathroom. I’m going to be very strategic about bathroom time.

I took a short hike on the trail of moss (lots of big trees with moss) and encountered a woman who had tripped on a rock and taken the fall fully on her face. Her cloth hat was drenched in blood from an abrasion on her forehead, her cheek was hugely swollen and her eye was swollen shut. She looked miserable. They had called for an ambulance so I just sat with them for a little bit while they waited.

My meal plan for the trip was heavily dependent on rotisserie chicken, which I left at home šŸ˜ž. So I’ve had to get creative with my (abundant but chicken-less) pantry. For dinner I invented hummus tacos. A couple of small wheat tortillas with hummus, cheddar, cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumber, and spinach. It was actually pretty good.

I topped it off with a marshmallow toasted on another sluggish rainforest fire.

I stopped to buy a bundle of dry firewood today but I think it just absorbs the moisture from the air and this is what you get.
