Alepisaurus

Adventure with the mister day 4. Between the cool ocean air, the sounds of the surf, and the big comfortable bed, we both slept the deepest longest sleep in days. THAT is an amazing feeling. But I realized my days had caught up to me, especially the hills of our first hike. Our plan to hike up Neahkahnie Mountain was out for me. Bob decided to hike without me, a first! He got AllTrails downloaded so he’d have a map and he headed out while I took a gentler walk on the beach.

Among the seaweed and bird-gutted crab shells I came across a long skinny fish washed ashore. Googling it, I thought it might be a cutlassfish. But after posting it on facebook I learned it’s an alepisaurus, a fish that lives in very deep water and is rarely seen on beaches.

Bob made it back with a gorgeous photo from the top of the mountain, reinforcing my disappointment that I couldn’t hike it. But glad he did, someone should enjoy it. When he left there were two cars at the trail head, and when he returned he crossed a steady stream of hikers and the parking lot was overflowing.

We had some lunch and took a little drive around town to see where the real people live. It’s a world apart from the tourist strip. We aimed for the 3:15 low tide to rock clamber out to tide pools at The Three Graces. The rock formations are interesting but not the best tide pools. Still. It’s always fun to rock clamber.

A lot of places in town were closed for Sunday dinner so we settled on an Indian food truck with copious but mediocre portions. Then time to relax before our final day tomorrow. I hope I wake up ready to power through one more hike!

It’s been so cold and windy during our stay and most of today we’ve been docked into a fog bank. No pretty sunset tonight.

Happy Fathers Day to you dads out there. Hope you all had lovely dad days.
