Joseph to Phillips Lake

I never get tired of this morning view! When I bought my van I wasn’t looking for one with a moonroof, but now I can’t imagine my van life without it. This is absolutely my favorite feature.

Hurricane Creek is at a deafening roar. I can understand why early settlers gave it this name. I just love the morning, with the infinite possibilities of the day ahead.

Ahhhh. The wide open spaces give me a wide open mind and a wide open heart and a wide open soul. The world expands inside of me.

Hell’s Canyon Overlook is so vast it’s impossible to get it in a photo. It’s deeper than the Grand Canyon.

The Hells Canyon Scenic Byway circles the Wallowa Mountains. FR 39 is a winding beautiful route with amazing places to camp. I’d have loved to stay at all of them.

I stopped for lunch at an awesome cmapground along Lake Fork Creek. My night stop is further ahead but this is one to come back for!

Through dry mountains on the way to Baker City. The twisty roads are a fun drive!

I stopped for the night at Phillips Lake. I originally thought I’d camp at Union Creek Campground along the north shore. It’s a really nice campground with big, private sites and flushing toilets (fancy!). But I continued on around the lake to see if I could find something smaller and less developed. Millers Lane CG is a sweet National Forest site with just a few sites (and pit toilets). Thunderstorms rolled in so I curled up in my nest with a book early.
