Kitchen remodel

I love my rear van kitchen but I never have a good place to set things while I’m gathering meal prep or fixing a snack.

I’ve been picturing adding a removable shelf but needed to work out the details. It couldn’t swing away because the rear space is a deep well. And I didn’t want it loose and rattling.

I bought some shelf mounts on Amazon for this project and decided to give them a try.

I cut a piece of 3/4” plywood to the width of my fridge bay. When I just mounted clips on the edge to connect with the frame, it sagged. So I added a single leg on the underside of the shelf that swings on a hinge and velcros to the shelf for storage.

I also added a set of clips to the back of the shelf and lower on the kitchen frame so I could hang it for storage.

There is a generous built in cubby to the side of the rear well that is great for storage, but it’s hard to make the most of it. I used to have Command hooks stuck to the plastic moulding and paracord strung like a net, but it kept pulling loose. I cut this 1/4” Masonite to fit and it works a little better, but it sags inward and blocks the kitchen lid sometimes. So that will be a project for another day!

  1. I saw your link on Facebook but I can’t find your post now. You have some really great ideas here, I love the real curtains. The way the kitchen lid is hinged took me awhile to understand, brilliant!

I’m planning to camperize my sienna for a road trip with my sons, so trying to learn from other people’s ideas.

    Thanks for the blog!
